I have a lot of fond memories of the first game and used to parrot what everyone else says about the AI being amazing because of those memories, but after beating it again not too long ago its safe to say the AI isn't great and actually very rudimentary, but was planned perfectly in sync with the levels. If you play as they expect you to play in every setpiece it feels like the enemies are reacting on the fly like a human would; taking cover from grenades, switching cover to cover and calling out flanking maneuvers, but if you pull back after an engagement or even knock a guard out from behind silently away from the planned gunfight area the enemies just home in on your position and they stop doing anything special just running into your shots. Its still a great game, but people should stop talking like they pulled off near sentient AI in 2005 when what they pulled off was a master understanding of how people would play each section of a level and adding smart event triggers to catch them.
