It's kinda sad that the PlayStation made this kind of game unpopular. But at the time gamers were tired of this and 3D was "impressive" ! Talking of neogeo, art of fighting 3 is a good example of how 2D could benefit from 3D technology. I know 2D pixel art purist don't like this, but a modern example of how far it can go is Dead Cells, I like to imagine if Saturn succeeded it would have gotten this kind of graphics.
