I'm replaying this game after 25 years and it's not as fun as I remembered. In fact, I'd say it sucks.

The tasks are boring. In order to collect a star you hit a switch, which makes a platform start moving, and then you jump on that platform to reach the star. Booooring.

Or you do some stupid downhill sledding thing around corners.

Maybe I'm expecting too much because I played Banjo Kazooie before this and had a lot of fun replaying it 25 years later.

I've collected 40 stars so far. I hope the game gets better.

>He doesn't get it

Low IQ med moment.

Here's a good counter example as to what OP Is describing: Mario 64

It pretty much explicitly tells you what the game is gonna be like, doing a callback to Mario 3, one of the biggest games ever released, only this time, it'll be 3D.

There are a couple of PS1 games I can recall with the aesthetic of Nightmare Creatures cover, where you're basically intimidated into buying the game.

Super Mario 64, a pinnacle in gaming history, remains an unparalleled masterpiece. Released in 1996, it revolutionized the platformer genre with its groundbreaking 3D world. Each level is a triumph of design, from the iconic Bob-omb Battlefield to the gravity-defying Cool, Cool Mountain. The game's inventive power-ups, like the Wing Cap and Metal Cap, add layers of excitement and strategy.

Mario's fluid movements and acrobatics showcase the Nintendo 64's capabilities, setting new standards for immersive gameplay. The memorable cast of characters, including the mischievous Lakitu and the formidable Bowser, adds charm and depth to the adventure.

Super Mario 64's influence echoes through the years, inspiring countless games and shaping the industry. Its innovative use of 3D space paved the way for future titles, leaving an indelible mark on the medium. The whimsical soundtrack, composed by Koji Kondo, enhances the overall experience, each note resonating with nostalgia.

Super Mario 64. It blew my mind when the first demo footage was released. By the time it finally came out, I'd already played 3D games on PC and I could see it for what it was - a boring platformer that's awkward to control. All credit to Nintendo for achieving what they did with no blueprint to work from, but it's just not good. It's the Super Mario Bros. 1 of the 3D games: not fun to control, not fun to play, but speedrunners still love it.

The only remotely challenging stars are some of the hundred coin ones

The game feels like a checklist but its still fun to replay

What are subtle examples of "jank" in Super Mario 64. Tawdry, unpolished or unfinished ideas...

Eg. for Ocarina of Time
>Link's model doesn't have a baldric
>you can't recall your boomerang anymore (you were initially able to "catch" it, presumably by timing the press) like in OoT3D
>if you skip obtaining magic, the game offers no indication you NEED it to even get the Goddess Spells or Fire Arrows

This game somehow validates the simulation theory that modern scientists are pushing.
If this wasn't a simulation, we would have gotten a game that exceeded it. Instead, we reached the conclusion to 3D games as early as 1996, seems off.

Was it really as good as they say? I've actually never played it (even on emulator) but I'm curious as to how good it actually was. Main complaints I've heard are:
>Controls are good EXCEPT when really precise movement is needed (narrow platforms etc)
>Too much repitition
>Camera sucks in places
Also IMO the visual design of the levels seems a bit bare-bones but I can give that a pass because it was an N64 launch title and one of the first of its kind. Bobblehead Bowser was a bit weird though.
