Well, it's SaGa, there's the best way to put it.

It's a mixture of everything, though most people agree that the unusual mechanics and sense of adventure are the biggest draws.
It's hard to properly make a comparison with other games due to how unique they are even among themselves, it's definitely a series you have to play for yourself to get a good grasp of it and they're solid games all around though a bit of an aquired taste due to their weird design choices.

SaGa Frontier is better for beginners.
SaGa Fronter 2 requires more effort to not be a frustrating experience and it's really not a good choice for newcomers as it's way more strict in a lot of things.

They have little in common with each other though, so if you don't like one you can play the other and see if you like it more.
