The new one is much better and the original sounds like a MIDI made in the late 90s/early 2000s, like a fan approximation of what the song should sound like (yeah, I know it’s original, but it sounds subpar and “off”). No one would have mistaken the original as an official Sonic track.

I was super into vgmusic.com when I was kid, I would download all the MIDI files from my favorite games and store them in a folder organized by game genre. I'd also spend hours just listening to random songs for games I'd never played.

Pre 1998 was mostly Cartoon Network/Nick.com for games and gamewinners for cheat codes.

In 2001 I finally got a PC for my home and soon after learned about http://www.vgmusic.com/ I would find some music there and play some AoE/SC/Diablo 1 etc etc.

Along with Newgrounds Stickdeath and tons of other crap.
