It may be a realistic steppe but it's also not fun to play in, furthermore the actual world of Hyrule is quite small in Ocarina; there's only 5 small settlements (Kokiri Forest, Kakariko Village, Goron City, Zora's Domain, Gerudo Valley), one central business district, one farm, and swathes of nothing inbetween. Compare that to the more impressive world of Zelda 2 or any contemporary RPG

It's pretty clearly the intention, even if the will at Nintendo to actually make this section conform perfectly to the original map wasn't all there.

The scale is definitely very fucked up but that's probably because you only come down here to get the hammer from spectacle rock, and smash open a hole into the neighboring rock for a magic container, so both of these had to be big enough for one tile entrances on the overworld.

A good way to tell that this area is intended to be the Zelda 1 area is not only the presence of spectacle rock, the graveyard, lakes, lost woods and death mountain being directly north of it, but also the fact that this is really the only place in Zelda 2 with so many tiny details and neighboring tiles being distinctly different for no discernable gameplay purpose, compared to the rest of the map where most things are just massively oversized (the gigantic graveyard, the gigantic swamps, long fucking roads, etc.)

I think the point is that Link is destined to be just some ranch boy. The fact that Malon is ever present is probably just because she's representative as a potential love interest. She's a ranch girl.

It could be more complicated with relationships decided upon but not revealed to the player, but I haven't noticed anything to prove this so I doubt it.

Some unrelated lore: Faron woods is actually on the Zelda 2 map, south of the second continent. But in Zelda 2, it's completely underwater. I find it amusing because Skyward Sword has a portion of the game where Faron woods is submerged underwater.

Here's the Zelda 2 map. Notice that if you stick the continents together, it will make a nice lake in the center. Compare it with the breath of the wild map and you'll find that is where Hyrule castle is. In fact, look at ruto town and the north castle on the Zelda 2 map, and you'll notice it matches up perfectly with Hebron region of BOTW in the same location. Even the roads match up. Death mountain also sharing a location with Darunia town.

Zelda 2. The entire first Zelda game is just a fraction of the overworld.

Not really. It's just that it's very hard to wage the war anymore now that BTC and the darkweb and research chemicals are blowing the state parasite goons the fuck out.

God I hope so. Don't you?

Vidya and drugs go hand in hand. How do you think Danmaku and Yoshi's Island became a thing? Metroid bosses, and the entirety of DOOM. Shit.

Except for opioids. To hell with that garbage.

>"This is the best..."

Stop. Nobody's opinions are objective. It's perfectly fine to say, "This is my favorite Zelda map," and leave it at that. Then other anons can discuss said map, or their own personal favorite Zelda maps, and hopefully your thread isn't sabotaged by you forcing your opinion on everybody else.

>cryptic secrets

I don't understand this meme, unless people complaining about Zelda II's "cryptic" secrets simply aren't good at the game. I beat Zelda II when I was only 10 years old. Every secret area is either explicitly pointed out to you by a villager, or the area is surrounded by suspicious landmarks or other objects that are distinctly out of place.

Can't damage weapon-resistant foes? To quote an early villager, "WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, USE FIRE"

Hidden village of Kasuto? After exiting a cave on the eastern continent, you end up in a small land mass with forests. This is obviously suspicious. And by this point in the game, the function of the hammer treasure should be well-known.

Three-Eye Palace? It's rather suspicious that there are three rocks aligned along the coast. And just earlier, you obtained and learned the function of the flute treasure.

Third heart container? The fact that you can traverse water after obtaining the boots should have encouraged you to experiment with this newly found ability.

Final heart container? A monster that's curiously dwelling in one of the villages will explicitly tell you to find it along the coastline if you keep bugging him.

Magic key? Kasuto's villagers outright tell you that there's a secret in town. When you come upon an empty lot at the edge of the village that's unlike anything else ever seen in the game, why wouldn't you start experimenting with your spell list?

Can't damage Thunderbird? Better experiment with those spells again, like the game has already thoroughly taught you to do.

Such a fun world to explore. Not nearly as many secrets as Zelda 1, but it made up for it by having actual towns and caverns you could enter.

The secrets in Zelda II were arguably handled better. Instead of having to bomb or burn the shit out of everything, you'd stumble into unmarked areas by accident, or by venturing into suspicious sections of the map.

I liked Zelda 2 more than LoZ because the combat had more variety to it. Upward thrust, down thrust, block, duck attack, jump attack, etc. It just had weird design choices that have already been touched upon. I was never a huge fan of top down Zelda though, and the 3D games are hit or miss for me. If they would have just removed Death Mountain from the game there would be a lot less controversy because after that the rest feels like a breeze.
