Retrannyarchers are strange beasts; No other emulator or software solution I know of gets its own set of tendie-tier fanboys who will actively stir up shit about other emulators and demand everything is made to fit their agenda. I've never heard of SNES9x or Genesis Plus EX users who let ZSNES or Kega fusion live rent free in their heads or go into threads specifically to shit on other emulators; They just said "Cool, a way to play games" and discussed the games instead

Retrannyarchers are different; They never actually talk about how much they like games; They spend their days arguing cycle accuracies they can't even verifiy since none of them own original hardware or have any interest in doing so, they demand other emulators should fit their framework and actively harass developers who don't respond to their autism, they defend their software overlord while parading around features they don't even use, and their massive victim complex makes them see any criticism of their software as personal attacks. They are like emulator bolsheviks but with more autism

A clusterfuck of a game that even at the time had major problems most other platformers didn't

The good:

Sonics action stages are perfectly servicable
The art direction and aestetic has a very early 2000s to them (Admittably a good or bad point, I choose to think its good)
The OST lyric tracks has a cheese and "so bad its good" quality to them

The bad

Both the shooting levels and treasure hunting levels range from mediocre to straight up awful. This is compounded by the fact there are far more of these than there were in SA1 and they go on for much longer - The treasure hunting levels in particular feels like the game is dicking you around since it uses RNG for where the treasure is hidden. This would be fine in theory if the moment to moment gameplay was fun, but it isnt; Its a horribly dull scavenger hunt and the RNG needlessly prolongs it

Shooting levels are completely unexciting despite everything going on in them. There's no real depth since the game autotargets enemies for you and you just end up mashing shoot constantly. All flash and no substance.

It is good in the grand scheme of things, but it could had been great. Collecting Tribals has no place being as much of a hassle as it is. Never mind the fact the game demands you collect all of the little bastards in order to get to the final level; There are so many annoying factors around it all

-Tribals can be killed by both enemies and you
-Dead Tribals don't respawn, you have to start the entire map over if you want to complete the area
-The game will hide them in places where they will be accidantally killed by you which means you have no choice but to start over unless you've memorized the location of every tribal in the game (Best example is how Junos second level starts you off with a big enemy next to an explosive barrel, tricking you into using the barrel to kill him only to gib the Tribal hidden on the opposite end of the barrel as it blows up)
-And worst of all; The game doesn't actually track your saved Tribals. Collected all of them but missed one/killed one? Tough shit, ALL of them are now back on the level instead of just having the one you missed, so you have no idea if you've collected the missing one or not and have to collect all of them just to make sure.

The Tribal demand are baffling to the point I assume some fuckwit at Rare was sexually aroused by meticilous busywork and it really brings the game down.

Make the tribal shit less taxing, leave the game in the oven a bit longer to even out some of the jank and make the controls tigher, and it would had easily been a classic. As it stands, its good with some issues that stop it from being great.

yes, it's fun. it's basically a good isometric platformer with great graphics and music. the level design is pretty good too.
however, it hardly fits Sonic much. "going fast" in it hardly works and is more for show than anything. same goes for pinball physics, they're rather awkward here and the spin / spin dash feel a bit awkward to use.
so it's not bad at all, just not quite something on the level of Sonic 1-2-3&K.
