I'd say Samus, except like many other characters I love from retro, she's got very little personality in the actual games. Same goes for Doomguy, the Vault Dweller, any SMT protag, Jake Armitage, and pretty much any MC from a WRPG.

I also love Red Mage's personality in the 8BT comics, but that's not exactly canon.

Super Metroid gets my vote as probably the greatest of retro gaming. Quake would probably beat it out depending on the day in my opinion, they were both excellent.
