I think the biggest difference between modern games and classic games is that classic games are a lot more focused in their design. You can really tell everything in a solid retro game was carefully thought out to fulfill a vision of what the gameplay should look like. There's very little wasted space and everything is in support of making the gameplay as engaging as possible.

Nowadays, it feels like games are designed by committee for the purpose of making sure the game closely resembles what a bunch of executives believe will generate the most money possible. A lot of specific issues with modern gaming, like everything being generic and safe and shit meant to nickel and dime the player, really comes down to the fact that there's no artistic vision behind a lot of modern games, just a corporate vision.
