And yes, some of those have some unique roles, but they're mostly the ones that start a generation, Emerald was the one that taught magic to Gerard while Sofia was the leader of Cumberland's resistance, Karl was the monk that destroyed the demons in the cave, etc.

Most of them have a definite role in the games' story, and the there are others that become legendary in their own generic right, like Hannibal who was the most popular RomaSaGa 2 Character in the last polls despite being a super generic Imperial Guard.
So famous they even gave him his own desing in Emperor's SaGa.
