Doom was very acceptable, that's why it became such a hit.

Strife like mentioned before was ahead of its time because it did something people did not accept yet.
people were not ready for it yet. thus it was ahead of its time.

System Shock was ahead of its time because it introduced gameplay mechanics that people were not ready for yet, they just wanted mindless doom clones.

Doom.. was not only perfectly on time it rode the wave of being on time.
