>/hhg/ truly is just discussing modern emulation handhelds specifically.
Which makes very little sense really

You can discuss brand new, high tech devices (which is already a huge stretch, it's as far from the concept of "retro" as it gets really), as long as you pretend their one and only purpose is emulating 20-30 years old consoles.

I mean I get how we got here, those chinese handhelds arguably started as low tech novelties for retro enthusiasts but the market is now flooded with state of the art laptops in handheld form, and there's a growing overlap between Steam Deck clones and top tier emulation handhelds that are more and more capable of running non-retro games such as PSVita, Wii and even Switch stuff. Then there's the fact lots of them are Android-based, and the obvious zoomer interest in smartphones is leading a growing number of publishers to bring non-retro games on mobile, which makes those "retro" handhelds more than capable of running modern games such as Fortnite, Genshin Impact, Call of Duty and so on.
So you can discuss what's basically top tier, ultra modern smartphone hardware as long as it has a bunch of physical buttons attached, and you're required to pretend they were only conceived to play games that are older than half the people on this website despite the increasingly noticeable retro-modern hybrid nature of such devices.
