Play Wizardry 1-5's PS1 ports, they are in Japanese but they have English text if you toy with the options. Also for added immersion, once you're near the end of Wizardry 1, watch the 80s OVA

These ones are arguably the hardest games and require a lot of patience and trial and error. Depending on your luck, these games will either be pure bullshit, or a fun thrilling challenge (aside from maybe Wizardry 4)

Wizardry 6-8 are the most accessible, but they are set in a separate universe/continuity from Wizardry 1-5. So you don't need to play 1-5 to understand 6-8. They also have more sci-fi elements and feel more like the Weird Fantasy genre (kinda like Moorcock's novels), whereas the original five games are pure fantasy.

Stay away from most of the Japanese spin-offs, a lot of them are pretty bad. I heard some of the untranslated/90s-era ones are good. But any of the Japanese spin-offs released after the early 2000s are pretty bad.

I'm currently playing pic related and enjoying quite a lot, it's simple, but fun when played in short bursts.
I'm also new to the genre, so I'll be watching this thread with interest.

I asked this question a while back and wound up trying the PS1 version, which unfortunately was flawed due to the fact there's no proper translation for it and the english option in the menu only translates half of the text in the game. Other than the PS1 version is there another alternative way to play the first few games with the least jank and best aesthetic/gameplay? Is the SNES version worth trying?

I want to get into the Wizardry games. Do you guys consider this version to be the best trilogy version?

Enjoy the pointless hassle of playing an inferior version.

Do yourself a favor, download a ps1 emulator and play the llylgamyn saga. Game is in Japanese but can easily be made to be played in English in the settings.

Alright, complete newfag to the genre. I've played jrpgs most of my life but as I've grown tired of the genre. I still really enjoy the genre but it's reliance on troupes and cliches today just makes most of the genre unbearable for me.

I want to gett into crpgs as they seem more interesting. I decided to start with the Wizardry series as I've played a few first person dungeon crawler jrpgs like the SMT series and really enjoyed those. I'm playing the ps1 version as it seems to be the best version of the first three games. Any suggestions for these games? the one thing that has always kind of scarred me about these games is situations were the player puts themself into a unwinnable situation and must start over. Is there anything like that to be cautious of?
