>When did you finish Super Mario Bros 3?
1992
>Which version? Did you emulate it?
Pic related
>Did you cheat or not? Tell me everything Anon-kun.
I did cheat, but I didn't know I was cheating. That famiclone version of SMB3 came with unlimited items you could use on the map screens, so you could basically use P wings on every level, or clouds or whatveer other item.
However, I didn't find out about it until some time, so initially I played it as intended.
I can't remember if the very first time we beat it we knew about this unlimited item thing, you. I think we might have went through the game normally. It was a joint effort between me and 2 friends, and for the final boss fight we called up my dad, he beat him on his first try and we cheered him while enjoying the ending.

>Reality is the SMB3 lel I played as a kid already had the flutes available, or something like that. dunno nes games were weird back then with all these pirated or modified cartridges...
Hehe yeah, I also had that version. it's a hacked version that I think was the most common in famiclones. It gives you unlimited items, of any items. You can use any item any time you wanted. I remember just having fun exploring every corner of every level using P-Wings. Fun times.
In the official version, you can grab 2 flutes on the 1st world (one in level 3, another in the fortress), then there's a 3rd flute at the end of world 2. It might take more than 10 minutes, considering you have to play world 2, and then once you get to world 8 you have to play through the whole world to reach Bowser's castle, though, but yeah it still has a way to reach it pretty fast.
>Ah, forgot about these, and yeah they are fun Don't remember how to reach them tho
You just need to find the secret exit on the 5th Star World level, which will lead you to another star road on top of the mountain in the middle of the map, warping you to special world.

Pic related is the definitive version of SMB3.
>get access to all items in the game from the start
>can use as many P-Wing, clouds to skip levels, whistles, any Mario powerup suit anytime, etc
It basically made you God. The only levels you couldn't skip were the ship/tank levels on world 8 which can't be skipped with the cloud, and the hammer bros/fire bros on the maps (but you could set them to sleep anytime with the music box).

>A lot of clone carts are in rough shape. Modern clone carts, like the Aliexpress stuff, are lower quality overall than the carts from the 80s and 90s.
This, you can notice the plastic is cheaper.
Modern stickers/labels are also a giveaway, the older ones, while often bizarre, are generally modifications of the original famicom labels, like pic related.

Flea markets in 3rd world countries, but even those are being sought after by collectors by now and becoming rarer, as opposed to modern bootlegs/repros.

By original art I mean that yeah, they used original source material, original art.
Well, except that Mario isn't there.
Here's another example.

Renting games from local video club stores was part of the mystique.
I remember one friday, energy went down but I still wanted to rent a game for the weekend, hoping it'd come back.
I remember stepping into the store and it was full of other kids too who were also looking to rent a game, all with lanterns. It's a scene I'll never forget.

It was my first Mario game (although I had played arcade Mario Bros. before, 3 was my first on the Super Mario series), on my famiclone, pic related my cart looked exactly like that, purple and all.

It was the first game I played with a map, before that I had only played arcade style games like circus charlie, bomberman or adventure island 1.

I played SMB3 with my dad and 2 neighbor kids every day. We eventually beat the game, my dad beat Bowser, I remember calling him to defeat him because we were panicking of fucking it up and having to do the level again.

One of my best childhood gaming memories for sure.

I also loved exploring around the levels, this particular famiclone cart had a sort of cheat code which would let you have access to unlimited powerups, all the time. So I had unlimited P-wing, I remember flying around in every corner of every level. Finding secret stuff like the sky level bonus in 1-3 felt very mysterious, the concept of finding secrets like that was new to me, although Adventure Island also has some secret bonus stages, the way you find them in SMB3 felt deeper.

Now I know there are a lot of great Famicom/NES games that also had things like maps and many secrets to explore/discover, but I jumped from older arcade-style, early famicom games, directly to SMB3, it was a huge change.

Played it again, the NES version on the Wii, a few years ago. Beat it and I still think it's a masterpiece of game design.
I started playing the SNES version the other day and I couldn't stop playing until I reached world 5, I did all the levels and hoarded a lot of powerups to use later.

honest question: do things like the cape or the flute really prevent you people from having fun with the games?

When I was a kid, I had a bootleg SMB3 cart for my famiclone, and it was hacked, when you pressed B on the map screen, you could select ANY item, they were unlimited. You wanted P-wing? You could use one anytime you wanted.
You wanted a flute? anytime!
You wanted a cloud to skip levels? sure.
You wanted to use tanooki or hammer bros in any level? off you go!

At the time, I didn't know it was hacked, I just thought that's how the game was. And you know what? it was MAD FUN.

Right, I was saying I didn't feel guilty for using the feather on SMW, because I had actually abused the P-Wing on SMB3 before, without knowing I was actually cheating. It was a thing most bootleg SMB3 carts had hacked in, you pressed B on the map screen and you had every item at your disposal from the get go. Including the flute.
