That wall next to the stairs you use to enter here has a chicken in it, if you're eating a hit or two before or at this point. As for the hall itself, just remember that

1. You don't have to crouch or anything to deflect the axes thrown at you if you have at least one whip upgrade, while crosses will bounce off shields, you're damaging the knights that way.

2. Keep walking as a medusa head spawns and they'll go right under you without hitting you, and never look behind you to the right unless absolutely necessary.

I'm not saying it won't take practice, in fact if you're using an emulator, consider saving here and restarting the game git even moar gud than you already are, but it can in fact become manageable, maybe even easy, with time and experience.

Death will probably still be a cunt, though, but by that point, spamming the hell out of cross to hit him and his sickles will be your best strategy. Even if you go in with just a single shot, you can pretty reliably get roman numeral Double and Triple Shots to drop. Make sure you don't get punked by leftover sickles until you grab the red orb, too.

Adding to what other anon is saying, you can also run to the middle of the room, start the fight, and then hop back up the way you came if you refrain from going for the meat just yet. You can sneak in hits while having a pretty easy way of avoiding their attacks that way.

Cross is great for Death if you can't carry the holy water to him, his sickles have a tendency to drop whip and shot upgrades, so you can go from throwing one cross to filling the screen with three real quick.

>great sense of pacing and every room has a different challenge in it
This so much, yeah. The first two levels throw a lot of concepts at you, but not in a way that slows things down; there it is, learn it, absorb it, go on, with largely simple and not very threatening enemies and jumps that can be easily dealt with while you grasp how Simon handles. It probably won't be until level 3 that you hit a wall, none the least because of the intimidating but dumb hunchbacks that gun for you and flighty skeletons trying to frustrate you into making a dumb move. It starts holding a knife to your dick after that while still feeling whatever fuckups occur are more your own fault while the stakes ramp up, particularly level 5 where there are no pits but a lot of enemies to fight.

He kind of is in 1. If you can carry the holy water from the very beginning of the level to him, bitch gets stunlocked so long as you have him burning. Failing that, spamming as many crosses as you can is your best bet.
