This. It was so that they could claim that it was not a DVD player without the remote, so they didn't have to pay their 20 shekels to DVD licensing until someone bought a remote.
Sony did something similar by making the remote control an extra cost item.

Because people want to use their $200 Walmart TV sets as PC displays. Which is fine as long as you can turn off the 100ms+ delay post-processing crap.
