I felt the need I should go back and give a proper explanation as to why I recommended Phoenix first (assuming you even read this). That is because after many, many hours of playing Marathon only one thing really impresses me, and that is map design and how the map feels when played. Phoenix is great from a map makers perspective, even though it falls behind in other areas. For example, I do not really enjoy the custom weapons of Phoenix, while on the other hand the custom weapons from Eternal and Rubicon are really satisfying to use. The music is okay but again, Eternal is much better. And while the maps are well made, they sometimes lack that classic Marathon atmosphere. I'd say if you're looking strictly to continue your Marathon experience, that Eternal or Rubicon would be your best bet.
