Actually I believe Emelia is the best starting character because it has the right difficulty, guidance, and introduces you to magic right away (rune magic quest line).

Beware on what you pick, the difficulty and guidance on a lot of the routes are all over the place.

Yeah that is her, I liked her story a lot and I am still wondering what happened at the end of the story after the final boss.

If you were going to use another character you might want to try out Blue since humans are easy to understand mechanically and that all you do is gather magic. You might want to save Riki for last or second to last due to how monsters work and magma slimes.

Blue's path isn't too bad either since it is just going to places to gain magic, and he can become pretty damn powerful during the end game. As always equip your magic users with guns because both magic and guns use the same stats.

I introduced my cousin to SaGa Frontier and Ogre Battle 64.

None-the-less I introduced him to video games by giving him my old Gameboy with Pokemon Red and Kirby's Dreamland. Sometimes co-op with him in Perfect Dark and Gunstar Heroes as well.
