So I finally have a real job and thus some disposable income and want set up a tv for all the games I used to play as a kid. I would like to buy the minimum amount of hardware necessary but am willing to buy any console I need to. I'd like to play domestic and imported games. I have no qualms about playing downloaded games either.

It seems to me that 8-Bit and 16 bit consoles are pretty much emulated perfectly as far as I can tell. How about the newer systems Playstation and N64? Are N64 games even playable without the funky controller?
