There have been studies done that demonstrate that people who can't understand tank controls do not possess a high level of spatial reasoning. They literally lack the brainpower to be able to imagine where a character is in a 3D space and interpret their movements in an abstract way.

People who struggle with tank control based movement schemes also tend to struggle with other tasks that require abstract movement and/or spatial reasoning, such as driving a remote controlled car, or identifying the correct answers in the classic folding cubes test (pic related).

They also tend to do exceedingly poorly (regardless of control scheme) in games like Descent that utilize 6dof.
