You forgot to add Minecraft.

Both are excellent games that make/made money ,and have a large rabid fan/player community around them. Other publishers and developers saw this and said "Hey that's the new hot ticket we got to copy!" and so everyone tried to make games similar to them. they also both came out around when consoles were in kind of a crash/slump (2008-2013). so everyone turned towards the pc, and low and behold company's like valve, blizzard, and actual good small developers were putting out quality titles (or at least passable) titles.

Mix this in with the corporate culture of profit as the goal and globohomo/diversity HR polices. Plus the new additions of "gamedev in doctrine" (people who get "degrees in game development with a static focus on one language of IDE, V.S actual skilled programmers, artists, and additional resource ex. a physics heavy game may have a physicist on board for reference), outside sourcing to foreign bodies who could care less about the final product and disorganization that comes with it, and Hollywood/parasites trying to insert themselves and values into their products. all this started mainly around 2010 onwards, and just got more obvious and worse over the years since (gamergate and trump winning in 2016 didn't help, only pushed it further).

This has lead to most of the economical and social problems in games right now (banning for stupid stuff like racial slurs, gambling mechanics with lootboxes/crates, rushed games, nothing new in gameplay, woke/agenda games(both left and neocon. see call of duty), "quirky" indie title that barley have any effort put into them and have one saving game mechanic (OMG look a virtual goose that can bother people! with shit graphics to boot!) ect.

That's because everybody learnt the wrong lessons from that game, they thought the story made it good while the gameplay/ai/control was the main focus (even valve I think doesn't know what made that so influential
