You kind of answered your own question. The N64 was made primarily with 3D games in mind. If you wanted 3D platformers, rail shooters, racing games, or FPS games, you bought an N64. If you wanted 2D platformers, shmups, 2D action adventure games, or RPG's (like Pokemon) you bought a Game Boy Color. This is the strategy Nintendo has stuck with up until the Switch which is obviously a handheld as well as a console.

This might be hard to believe, but GBC and GBA are 3 years apart in release dates. I'm not disagreeing with you on the rule, but if you're calling GBA a zoomer handheld, then that also applies to the GBC.
