I like the PS2vanias, flaws and dumb design decisions and all. I'm rather fond of some of IGA's games, some being my favorites in the franchise, even.

But holy shit, the guy was arrogant as fuck early in his tenure on Castlevania. I wish I was better at finding these interviews when they come up, but I remember reading his interview for Harmony of Dissonance from when it came out about, no joke, no irony or anything, if the translation was to be believed, CoTM's cards made it too un-Castlevanialike, vis a vis HoD'd spellbooks
>"Remember Sypha and her spells from CV3? : D"
Like holy sit, far as I know quite possibly the first example of "IT'S NOT REEEEEEAL CASTLEVANIA!1!1!" and of course it would come from IGA himself. I wouldn't even say he's right anyway, SoTN had the familiar cards, if you want to get that pedantic.

Whether or not Legacy of Darkness is better maybe going to depend on your tastes? Like generally, yeah, it's the better version, it's supposed to the better version, but it gains some things like upgrades having better visuals and player characters arguably handling better while losing some things like Reinhardt & Carrie's intro having narration or certain vampires crawling on all fours, really just different enemy and level design in general.

But yeah, if you haven't already played either version, I'm inclined to say go for Legacy, unless it's expensive as fuck, I guess, which by this point it probably is.

Stuff like this is exactly what I loved about Legacy of Darkness while playing with a friend years ago. First Castlevania and honestly is part of how it made such a good first impression to me. Dracula punking Cornell just to get his overflowing werewolf power is something I also appreciate.

As much as I loved PoR afterwards, stuff like how the whip works and how everyone is fine with John not being open and honest with his own fucking son about his heritage was rather jarring.

Like a lot of others said, yes, it's actually a pretty good game with good gameplay and one hell of an appropriate setting in so many ways, but if you're going to play it, do keep in mind that it is a relatively early action platformer that make take some adjusting to. Case in point, don't go wild on the controller, you can end up doing something stupid like accidentally doing a dodge off into a river of poison.
