Is it actually worth it to get into shmups?

Why are shmups such a divisive genre? It seems like people either love them or hate them, whereas something like platformers and action games have a more universal appeal that anyone can get.

Personally I think shmups (the classic ones, not so much danmaku) are a genre of the some of the purest skill-based single-player gameplay in the medium, and it's a shame that more people haven't seriously given them a chance or were put off by their difficulty.

Recommended tate shmups for newbies to the Genre

I’ve played many horizontal shooters from classic consoles but want to take the dive into cave games. So far I’ve tried donpachi and dodonpachi with great difficulty.

What got you into bullet hells/shmups?

Also stick vs controller?
