I'm going to try taking on dq/dw 1-4 on NES. I already played the enhanced versions for 1-3, and they were pretty short, are the originals the same way or did they streamline a lot in most recent versions? I want to experience the old versions because I felt like something was missing.

I love 1 and 3. 5 is supposed to be pretty good.
As for what you are in for... Fairly straightforward RPG's with great soundtracks. Nothing too complicated plot wise, with turn based combat, and well laid out dungeons.

Honestly, pick one and play it. If you like it, chances are that you will like the rest.

One word of caution: the first 3 were made in the 80's, and as such they aren't fucking around, and neither will they hold your hand.

Dragon quest, as the story was simple and straight forward: Save the princess, Save the world. The combat is easy to understand because it's just you and the monster.

Like Final Fantasy is great, but it's story takes a sharp turn to crazy town at the end of the game. You have four party members who could be one of six different classes to choose from, and they all need to be managed.

Now admittedly I have never played a Phantasy Star in my life (all though it's still on my to do list) but it might have a crazier story than Final Fantasy.

That could be said of a great many games.

What is the best version of this game? NES, GBC, SNES, or Mobile?

Is there a clear cut definition as to what's a J-RPG and what's not? I understand most J-RPG's have similar game play (Final Fantasy, Mother series, and Dragon Quest) but whenever I cal games like LoZ and Pokemon J-RPG's people always have a problem. They're Japanese, and you play a role.

Which RPGs (Western or Japanese) do you remember having unusual stories? Ones that didn't conform to the standard plots like that have become tired.

I'm not talking necessarily Placescape's level of difference and choice, but I'd like to play something retro with a bit of a twist to the plot(s) in the game.

Pic unrelated, it was just the only RPG image I had handy on my phone.
