Scanlines (the dark lines) are nice because they hide the sharp edges between pixels that are adjacent vertically. Without them, a very sharp display will make graphics look excessively blocky.

Yes, a CRT doesn't display sharp boundaries between adjacent pixels, but it's not actually missing any information in the image the developers intended. NES sprites aren't "blocky" because the developers wanted them to be; the low resolution is a result of technical limitations. An NES image is only defined at 256 points horizontally. How you get what to display in between those points is your own business.
