I'm hesitant to repost an image because of a certain trend but SNES on TrimUI with a bezel is pretty good. I mostly use it for GBA, Wonderswan and PSP atm.
I got an RGB30 too and mostly use that for SNES/GB/GBC style content but 4:3 and sub 4:3 can be alright on 16:9 so long as you know what you're working with.
I get the autism that people experience with "wasted screen real estate" but I find it's less of an issue on horizontals where ergonomics are more important playing RPGs for a long time, the Trim has those vita tier ergos that just feel right for long play sessions.
I find that dead space on a screen feels worse when it's slapped right in the centre of a frame with nothing surrounding it but bezels really can mitigate the effect. It takes <5m to make a quick and dirty general bezel for the platform/device. Use dark colours & gradients and you're on your way to a winner.

I know it's hypocritical to say all that and then play SNES on an RGB30 when I'm only gaining .1" of screen real estate but the main factor in that is that I like using syncthing for saves & states more, so I'm in a state of juggling 2 devices depending on what mood I'm in.
