Why isn't this one of the most renowned NES games, especially considering the ROM is available for free on one of the creators' websites?

What it did was amazing on the console, it's got excellent depth, a whole three dimensional galaxy, fairly complex combat and stays interesting for ages.

Googling it produces very few results specifically about the NES version, despite it being probably the most technologically impressive. Have any of you played it?
