You're a member of a secret hacker group in this futuristic cyberpunk city.
You find a gun-shaped computer equipped with a demon summoning program.
Your best friend gets possessed by a demon that was residing within the computer, becoming a powerful witch named Nemissa.
Now you and Nemissa bust uncover this supernatural conspiracy in this futuristic-urban setting, slaying, recruiting and slaying demons from various real-world mythology and religions.
Gameplay-wise, you traverse areas in a first-person view, where you will encounter demons. The battle system was criticized for being dated, but considering you're looking for PSX era RPGs, I think you'll do fine.
Basically, you decide what each party member does and let the turn play out. You can recruit enemy demons to enlist as part of your party. You can fuse them to become stronger demons.
Being a game in the Megami Tensei series, it has considerable difficulty. Things like equipment, stats, buffs, and your party are essential for your survival.
Unless you can read Japanese, the actual PSX version is out of the question. There is an official English version for the 3DS that seems to stay mostly the same, aside from a few QOL features which I don't really hear anyone complain about. You can check it out if you want to.
TD;LR I would recommend it, it's real good as a retro RPG.

Inferior in every way to things like Dragon Force and Panzer Dragoon Saga, if we're talking about RPGs. But it's still worth a playthrough since the aesthetics of the 90's internet future is spot on and the OST is damn good. Still, there's no point in playing the Saturn version since the PS1 version is a direct upgrade and the 3DS port is the same upgraded port but in english and with more content.

It's a kickass game with a cool cyberpunk story and great gameplay, well worth playing. The dungeons are the weak-point, but they're not terrible, just uninspired by Megaten standards.

Soul Hackers is the second game on the Devil Summoner sub-series, and a fan-favorite in Japan.

It's pretty good and has a brutal ultimate boss fight on the 3DS version.

Devil Summoner and Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers.

The later got a translated, enhanced port to the 3DS so you might just want to play that, but if you're itching to play a good RPG on the Saturn, both DS games are classics, especially SH.

Add Soul Hackers while you're at it.
