I don't know about that. The only thing the famicom original has on the remake is graphics. Original has hard obsolesce. As in, the scholar or red mage literally don't get new weapons after hein obsolete.

Late game classes are better in the remake, too. But the job level systems means that lower tier classes are perfectly viable and really only get outshined if you spend a ton of time grinding the final tier of classes.

In any event, I'm replaying FF9, which I haven't touched in a decade. I never really liked this one in the past due to the poor pacing, but honestly with this series, and JRPGs in general, being in such a sorry state for so long, this is seeming like a masterpiece and I'm enjoying it. I also am using a different party which is much more fun.

If you don't like JRPGs, FFVI isn't going to change your mind. It isn't a JRPG for people who don't like the genre, it is just a really good one with a really cool aesthetic and good characters.

The Phantasy Star series (3 was pretty boring though, ignore that one) and Lunar 2 are the only 16bit RPGs I've played that I felt were on Squaresoft's level. I think the level of customization in FF6, along with the world of ruin second act, puts it ahead of them, but they are definitely on par with the excellent FF4.

I played most of the SNES library way back when, trying to find more RPGs as engrossing as Square's stuff, and I never found any until checking out Sega's library more than a decade later. And yes, Lunar 2 is best as a 16bit game. The level design, music and artwork is actually better than the 32bit Playstation version.
