Holy shit, this game's hard and borderline unfair as fuck. Nothing like being within smelling distance of the level's end with 135 health and being one-shotted by a missile mook that looks identical to the generic hitscan cunts.

I'm currently practicing and trying to beat Gradius Gaiden. This shit is fucking hardcore, the "die halfway through a later stage and get ready to sweat" mechanic is pretty harsh. Made it to the level 6 boss, but three forms was 2much4me.
