YM2612 = A synthesizer
+ You control the instrument directly
- Less flexible

SNES A-DSP = A sample player
+ More flexible
- More "muddy"

That's it. They both have strengths and weaknesses

The YM2616 is essentially an instrument. You can make some really rad tunes with it. However it has a distinctive sound that limits the variety of music and sound effects it can play effectively (that's why all explosions on the Genesis sound like farts; it wasn't really meant to make those sounds).

The A-DSP was a sample player. You gave it PCM waveforms and it played them. This made it easy to get the sound of any orchestral instrument into your game with little effort. The major downside is that the audio is effectively only 3-bit (even though the data is 4-bit), and combined with the Gaussian filter, results in muffled or muddy sound compared to the Genesis.

You guys and your autism tho. You'd rather have only one thing rather than two things. Variety is the spice of life. Faggots.

JJ Squawkers is magical.

Super Hang-On? Fuck no. Barely hear about it (everyone seems to play and mention Outrun loads more) and it's actually ace as fuck.

Rayforce is my favorite shmup of them all.
Fantastic game. Surprisingly deep mechanics for a '94 release, too.

and that presentation, hnnng
From space, to the moon, to the skies, to the surface, to the underground cities, all seamless, all with beautiful semi-3D effects.

also, this motherfucker is pretty iconic for a guy who appears so late in the game

I'm with you on this. Outrunners is stunning. Gorgeous visuals. Wonderful course design. It's Outrun but bigger and better. Loses a bit of the relaxed feeling, with Sega's louder style coming more into play.

but you can't relax when all of this backed by SEGA SYSTEM MULTI 32 POWER

Virtual On is a masterpiece.
I still wish I could get to a VOOT cabinet in the US. There's a VO cab down by Miami that I go to sometimes to play with some buddies.

playing VOOT on the DC is fine, but twin sticks feel like you're really piloting a mech, it's so good

Rayforce.
The music, the presentation. Seamless stage transitions. Damn near everything about it is a work of art. Even on a gameplay level, it has an interesting, advanced scoring system that rivals those found in more recent shmups.

it's an exciting game that tells a basic but interesting story without a damn word of exposition, just using visuals and music and sold as fuck gameplay

Fighting in PSO2 is much better though. It's clunky as fuck in PSO1.
Sure, you can make a moeblob bitch in PSO2, but who gives a shit? The actual meat of the game is legitimately better.

Sonic Adventure is also pretty shit, and I'm saying this as a longtime Sega fan.
it did impress the shit out of me in '98 though, so it does deserve credit where it's due

But even the Sonic levels are generally poorly designed in SA1 (and that's something I noticed back then -- Windy Valley, Sky Deck, there's more but I'm hitting char limit). Rest of the game doesn't fare much better. We're not even touching on the camera, the hilariously awful glitches (I've fallen through the ground in Speed Highway more times than I care to remember), Big, Amy, Gamma, etc.
SA2 almost fixes everything wrong with SA1, except it has it's own whole ream of bullshit and problems

JSR is standout. Controls are a bit iffy, but it's definitely one of those games that showed how great Sega was. Fantastic look, music, and gameplay.

I still need to play through Shenmue -- I have a save sitting on my DC where I'm at the very first moment I could save so that when I did get around to playing it, I could just get going right then and there

man, it really was just Sonic Team that fucked up in that 1998-2003 period, rest of Sega never stopped being ace as fuck

>Space Invaders is a more pure work of art than anything by Irem.
I knew it was possible to have an opinion this bad, but I still don't want to be reminded of the fact.
