Kid is high-mid at best. Her spot is inflated on tier lists due to ease of access and her steal ability. If you want a thief, Fargo is a much better character despite joining later (around the time Kid can join permanently I think). Hell, Harle is a better (non-thief) Kid than Kid is, and the game sure knows about it. Kid is who you keep around if you don't like experimenting to see who's more deserving in your party. For that matter, while Leena is a must for the first half of the game, I usually don't keep her around when the final party starts to form (after the Lynx arc).

That's right. Despite her presence in the story and the game obviously trying pretty hard to make her your main sweetie, she is a totally optional character. If you're trying to get all the characters through NG+ though (which requires at least playing all the way up to Harle and then rebooting NG+ because the devs are silly), there is a point in Guldove where deciding to help her grants access to a whole other set of characters, but it also creates a detour off the main quest and you can't get the best character that way. Kid just isn't endgame material unless you really, really need a Red innate.
