Metroid II set the stage for all later 2D Metroid games in both graphics and story. It also has the best graphics for a regular game boy game. They even used it has the template for reverse engineering color into Super Game Boy/Game Boy Color.

If you're going to claim Metroid II didn't age well, you have to claim no GB game aged well.
