Any shmups you play lately, /vr/troopers? Retro re-releases, ports, and emulation welcome.

I'm currently enjoying the Darius games from the Cozmic Collection. I've 1cc'd Darius 1 vanilla (using the low-power strategy) and Darius Gaiden, though Darius 2 in all its versions are kicking my ass. One death: end of your run. Lost shield: end of your run.

Lots of good stuff on ACA releases as well. Try out Plus Alpha. It's fun!

does it let you save? I can't remember how the PS1 port works...

That being said, the game is like 45 minutes to an hour, so yeah, I think you can be expected to beat it in one sitting! Those boss fights are longer than the stages though - even longer if you don't know how to use your alpha beam effectively.

The PS1 port isn't as good compared some of the other 32bit shooters like Einhander, Gradius Gaiden, and RayCrisis.

However, the game itself is excellent, and every bit as good as the games listed above. It's just plagued with really bad slowdown on the PS1 - though some people might not be as picky (later stages are bad though). The PS2 version is the one to play, imo, even if it doesn't come with the boss rush mode. No slowdown allows the game to work its godlike magic.

Right series, wrong game.

Only plebs who can't appreciate its avant garde quality will deny this as OGR's magnum opus.

G-Darius' intro really gets to me. The cool music plus the vague, nonsensical, yet awesome text (YOU WILL SEE THE CREATION OF NEW LIVES) all comes together.
