Also the whole Adventure Island series. Some of the best platformer games ever made, and rather forgotten by modern players. I rarely see them on NES top lists, yet to me, Adventure Island 2 or 3 are easily up there with SMB3

Is Adventure Island lowey the kinoest retro action-platforming series?

Adventure Island series was popular as fuck in the late 80s and early 90s, but as time went on, they were forgotten.
Adventure Island II and III are some of the best action-platformers ever made. Period.
Adventure Island IV is a gorgeous adventure-platformer too.

Well, the Wonder Boy series went more medieval-fantasy afterwards, while Adventure Island kept the caveman/jungle setting for the most part.

I'm surprised the Adventure Island series isn't as popular as many other retro series. It's legit one of the best platforming series, up there with series like Mario, Shinobi and Castlevania imo.

OP play the Adventure Island games. They control pretty much like Mario where you hold B to run and can make long jumps by running and jumping.
Adventure Island 1 is Wonder Boy with Master Higgins as MC and good music, but from AI 2 onwards the games became more of their own thing and have big overworld maps to explore, find secrets, etc. You can also ride animal friends, it did the multiple animal buddy thing way before DKC. And showed that the Famicom could do animal buddies no problem (despite Miyamoto saying he couldn't work Yoshi out and had to wait for SNES)

This whole fucking series.

They were popular back in the day and now it seems they were forgotten in favor of other more popular series like Mario or Megaman.
But fuck, Adventure Island are some of the best platformer games I've played, especially from 2 onwards. 1 is cool, it's Wonder Boy and that was a good arcade game, but the later ones by Hudson are platforming delicatessen.

What kind of ridiculous, subjective criticism do you have for the Adventure Island series, OP?

Classic platformer, must play for anyone who likes the genre or retro games in general.

The sequels are much better.

This series doesn't get discussed/mentioned enough, even though they were mad popular back in the day.
