Play Popful Mail. Uses Genesis soundchip and there's no time travel gimmick

>Also are the 32X or CD worth looking into?
Do not buy a SEGA CD or 32X, but yes, absolutely. Emulate instead, or if you absolutely have to run them on original hardware then buy a Mega SD or Mega Everdrive Pro for SEGA CD.

My top ten for SEGA CD
>Sonic CD
>The Terminator
>Starblade
>Road Rash
>Keio Flying Squadron
>Lords of Thunder
>Android Assault: Revenge of Bari-Arm
>Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure
>Silpheed
>After Burner III

Honestly SEGA CD deserves to be treated as its own console like Saturn, despite being an add-on it really is basically the successor to the Genesis.

32X is literally only forty games, but there are still some very good ones imo like Knuckles Chaotix, Virtua Racing Deluxe, After Burner, Shadow Squadron, and Darxide.

Very good taste in this post. I played Gley Lancer for the first time earlier this year and it's surprisingly good
>Ristar and Rocket Knight Adventures are mascot platformers, sure, but they're good. The latter especially.
I played these two before touching Dynamite Headdy and I still prefer them both over that game (not that it's bad though).

>Magical Pop'n

>Pop'n Music
To make things more confusing two of these games are kind of similar (Popful Mail even has a completely different game on Super Famicom) and most of them are Japan-exclusive aside from pic related.

Alright, there are multiple reasons for this. For one, Phantasy Star and Shining/Force predate Sonic by several years and have always been SEGA's primary RPG series. The other answer is both of our Sonic RPG's got cancelled. Sonic-16 would have basically been a SatAM RPG but was turned down by Naka, and Popful Mail would've been localized as "Sister Sonic" but they decided not to change it after fans basically protested it.

If you like Trials of Mana, probably check out Beyond Oasis, Crusader of Centy, LandStalker, Light Crusader, or Sword of Vermilion. All great Genesis-exclusive action adventure games, and some of them like Oasis and LandStalker have sequels on Saturn (and Dreamcast for LandStalker).

Popful Mail on SEGA CD almost got the same treatment as Mean Bean Machine, on one hand I'm glad it didn't, on the other hand it would make for a really cool rom hack idea. They could just use Sonia or something

Play more SEGA CD games (aka the best ones on the platform)

>>10158149
Also this. Genesis really started hitting its stride in '92 and '93 at least. Thunder Force IV wasn't until '92, same year as Streets of Rage 2. Gunstar Heroes and Dynamite Headdy didn't come until '93 and '94.

OP if you enjoy Sonic CD, I highly recommend playing some other SEGA CD titles like Popful Mail, Earthworm Jim, and Mickey Mania. It's honestly a fantastic system that shouldn't be skipped (especially considering what came after)

RPG that plays more like a platformer. Symphony of the Night is also in this category, sort of. Also check out Magic Knight Rayearth on Saturn.
