Basically the TLDR of this is if you're pushing 20k+ hours on your CRT it's already fucked. No CRT will come close to being in spec today. The phosphor is decaying. Both luminance and color reproduction are effected. This is fact. CRT manufactures know this and this is why they let you crank the luminance up. All you're doing is preventing the death and ruining color reproduction and contrast.

This article talks about other factors effecting lifespans of CRTs but phosphor is the number one limiting factor.
