CDX already did this

This is like "if only the N64 played SNES games". Just play SNES instead

I don't though

CDX already plays CD's

That would be nice but the Saturn still would've probably ruined it unfortunately

>>11129224
The Neptune was supposed to be our Saturn. At least we still got the CDX which came with a Sonic game and could still play Genesis carts.

>Why would they try to compete with their own brand?
Do you know how there's >>>/co/, and then there's >>>/a/? Well, SEGA of America (and the Genesis) was basically like /co/, with stuff like Kid Chameleon, Sonic Spinball, and Comix Zone. Coincidentally, /co/ licenses like Virgin's Aladdin and the Disney games (made by SEGA of Japan) were huge on the Genesis. SEGA of Japan was more like /a/, with stuff like Sakura Taisen, Virtua Fighter, and Burning Rangers. Still great games, but if you take a bunch of random threads from /a/ and plop them on /co/ instead, it doesn't quite work so well. The Saturn would be like if /co/ randomly disappeared and everyone was just redirected to /a/ instead, with both boards trying to somehow compromise and make it work. It's not so much that they were competing, but it was more of a miscommunication on both sides.

If you get really bored just switch to SEGA CD and Dreamcast instead. CD for 2D 16-bit goodness, Dreamcast for everything Saturn should've had. Both have a much stronger selection of western games, too

I like the Saturn but it's nowhere near as good as SEGA's other CD consoles. Or PS1

The more I think about this the more I realize how it would've probably been a good idea. We would've had more Sonic, more Streets of Rage, more Genesis series in general, but in 32-bit, plus backwards compatibility with Genesis. Thankfully we at least got the CDX, which is like a lite version of this idea.

>>10775026
It was only used for FMV games at the time, but presumably it could've been used for something really cool had they not cut support for it so early on. I feel it would've been like a slightly cooler 3DO

Other anon already responded, but Nomad already existed

To those saying Saturn should've been backwards compatible, the very reason they did not do that is because the Genesis itself was forward compatible. You wanted more games you'd buy an add-on or a CDX. Saturn and N64 both had expansion ports for new games, not old games. Otherwise there would be no reason to buy one at all

Everyone misses this somehow. In fact SEGA already had two backwards compatible consoles designed this exact way, the CDX and the Neptune, which obviously we never got because of the Saturn. If people want backwards compatibility and Genesis-style games, they should play those two instead of Saturn.

To me this is like Nintendo fans complaining about the N64 when the SNES already exists. It's a no-brainer but somehow everybody misses it

SEGA CD is unironically my favorite console. It's like the took the standalone Genesis and made it even better. I think of it as a "Gen 4.5" console of sorts.

Everything people wanted on Saturn was already on SEGA CD
>new Sonic game
>cartridge slot for Genesis games (CDX)
>other SEGA IP's like Streets of Rage and Golden Axe (released on compilation disc)
>other classic 16-bit games (Final Fight, Mickey Mania, Earthworm Jim, etc.)
It was literally Saturn but better. Dreamcast was the console Saturn should've been. You can pretty much skip from SEGA CD to Dreamcast without missing much

Remember the Saturn was the successor to the 32X, not the Genesis. The CDX has a lot of what's listed here, including the Genesis cart slot in the back. It is basically a SEGA CD in the style of a Saturn. Plus it had Sonic and Ecco as pack-in titles.

Look up the CDX, it was basically everything Genesis fans wanted Saturn to be. Comes with Sonic CD and Ecco, cartridge slot plays regular Genesis games, etc.

Saturn did have several compilations, not just Sonic Jam but also SEGA Ages Vol. 1, the Disney game compilations, several Capcom compilations, Thunder Force collection, several Konami shmup compilations etc. so while it wasn't necessarily backwards compatible there were still a decent amount of Genesis and 16-bit era games on it.

Somehow it manages to be less interesting than the 3DO despite having way more games. Dreamcast has maybe half the amount of Saturn's games and still manages to be better in pretty much every area. It's not bad but they could've done better, especially for 1995. I still think pic related is a better machine, partially since that cartridge slot can actually play Genesis games

>>10152090
Genesis had Power Base Converter for SMS games, SNES had Super Game Boy which was slightly different but still allowed you to play games from the previous gen like Donkey Kong and DuckTales

I still think it is very bizarre that there is a small minority of Saturn fans that hate Tom and Bernie. I realize most of them are not like this but it's just a very strange opinion to have for a company that you allegedly like lol

This is what I have been trying to tell people
>backwards compatible with Genesis games
>has an actual Sonic game
>more than just sports and fighting games
I don't know why people gravitate towards Saturn, SEGA CD was the one that had actual Genesis stuff on it like Mickey Mania and Earthworm Jim. It was the true successor to the Genesis

>Why didn't they just make a 'super genesis' that was CD based and backward compatible instead of something that supposedly expanded the genesis, but didn't?
Because they did, but by that point Japan was already about to force Saturn on the world. Neptune was also in the works for 32X but got canned for the same reason. Both of these would've been way cheaper and easier to produce games for than Saturn.

They did that, in fact there were two of them, CDX and X'Eye. And they're both better than Saturn

SEGA CD was literally the successor to the Genesis, 32X and Saturn were the ones that had issues.

More SEGA CD. Maybe Popful Mail at some point

SEGA CD is honestly such a cool add-on. The Saturn is neat but it's the SEGA CD that kept me coming back ultimately. Stuff like Terminator, Starblade, Road Rash, Keio Flying Squadron, Lords of Thunder, Android Assault were totally mindblowing for me. The Dreamcast is also neat, I need to try more of those at some point too. Growing up I only ever owned a Genesis and a Pico (Nintendo kid I guess) but my cousin had all of the cool SEGA stuff.

I still think the CDX was a better successor to the Genesis than whatever the Saturn was supposed to be. Wish more people knew about it, there was a lot more stuff released between the Genesis and Saturn than people realize.

>>9525638
The better question question is, why release the Saturn in the west at all? 32X had Spider-Man and Mortal Kombat, plus 3D games like Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter, and Knuckles' game is closer to a proper Sonic game than anything the Saturn got. The last thing anyone over here was asking for was arcade ports, especially ports of obscure Japanese games like Purikura Taisakusen or Taisen Puzzle-Dama. They'd have been better off making the Neptune and just leaving the Saturn in Japan where it belonged. We probably would've even got that 3D Sonic game too, since Sonic Mars was in the works at the time.

Always go for the SEGA CD or 32X ports when available, especially for games like Ecco the Dolphin, Mickey Mania, Earthworm Jim, etc. SEGA CD and 32X in general are important imo, people tend to forget that there were two whole platforms in between Genesis and Saturn, even if they weren't full fledged consoles. In some cases like Streets of Rage 3 it's perhaps better to opt for the Japanese version if you want it uncensored and with the lower difficulty level.

>>9513549
For the most part this is true, though there are a handful of EU exclusives even on Genesis/MD, and I will say some Euro-developed games like Zool seem to control a bit better at the 50hz speed that they were designed for than 60hz which makes them crazy fast and borderline unplayable.

SEGA of Japan misreading the market and basically completely disregarding the western install base which was already firmly planted in the Genesis brand. A Neptune with Sonic Mars or an upgraded CDX would've sold like hotcakes, but instead we got stuff like Manx TT and the infamously bad Virtua Fighter and Daytona ports, which weren't necessarily the games we wanted to begin with

A lot of people wish the Saturn had a proper mainline Sonic title and other Genesis-era SEGA titles, and that you could use the cartridge slot in the back for actual Genesis games. The good news that console actually already exists in the form of the CDX, most people just don't know about it

This pretty much satisfied my wishes for a "better" Saturn console. Yeah, it couldn't really do 3D outside of scaling effects, but the Saturn wasn't really much better at it. X-Treme honestly doesn't look very good to me and it's kind of silly to think about when the Adventure games also already exist
