Personally aside from the main games, I like Final Doom and No Rest for the Living
Master Levels is a mess though, it was poorly handled on ids part and just contains 20 pwads. Some of which are gimmicky and aged poorly.

In answer to OPs query, Yeah Doom is still fun without mods. I hardly play with mods.
