Let's list some words that are nowadays used on a daily basis in video game discussion that didn't exist back in the day.
I'll start:
>Casual and Hardcore as a noun.
While some people might have used the words "hardcore" or "casual/casually" here and there, as adjectives, the notion of a person being a "Hardcore" or a "Casual" gamer wasn't seen back in the day. Which leads to:
>Gamer
I remember some other funny nicknames that magazine editors used for video game fans, such as "Gamemaniacs" or "Video freaks", maybe there are some old magazines that coincidentally used "gamer" as another of all these many others nicknames, but in general, there wasn't really a word to describe a person who likes games, nor people referred themselves as "Gamemaniacs" or anything of the sort. Liking games back then wasn't as tribal, it was ironically more general, instead of another isolated group of people in society.
>JRPG
First of all, RPG wasn't even a popular genre back then, only in the very late 90s is started picking up steam after FF7, back then, the people who knew what RPGs were, didn't differentiate between J and W, it was just RPG.

What are some other words or expressions you can think of?

>love
NES, Genesis and SNES are my holy trinity of video games
>dislike
I didn't fully dislike any of the systems I had, but 3DO, I didn't play much on it before I traded it in for a playstation.
>want more time with
I'd like to explore the Game Boy catalogue more.

In the last thread, /vr/ didn't get triggered.
Good luck this round 2, /v/ and /vg/!

Aging means what it means, the word itself puts it into a context.
The word you're looking for is dated (which, by definition, every game covered on /vr/ is "dated")

"games age" meme is just a way plebs have to say "I can't get into this old game".

Games are either good or bad (or rather, you like them or not), it has nothing to do with when they were released, and they surely don't "age"; they're still the same ones as they were 20 or 30 years ago.

A couple of friends and I have a game-of-the-month club. Each of us in turn picks a game for the month, and after we've played through the games we each contribute "hidden gem" games to a chart and roll a dice to decide for the last one in the cycle.

Before we started doing this, I was so caught up in work that I stopped playing and stopped communicating with my friends. We all live in different states now, so it's hard to synch our schedules up. Then I read a piece about the regrets of dieing people and recurring themes were "I wish I had stayed in contact with my friends" and "I wish I hadn't worked so hard." I emailed them after coming up with the game-of-the-month idea when I realized that we all really enjoyed playing older games. Before this, I had never touched an emulator so it was really eye-opening to me to see what a huge library there was at my fingertips.

Having the club helps me to keep focused and I've told my buddies "If I ever say I don't have enough time, call bullshit on me and remind me why we started this." We've all been having a blast and because each of us had different systems growing up and tastes in gaming, we're getting to play stuff that would normally be outside of our comfort zones.

All right, anons, pick a mod you're working on/like

what's a big pipe dream that you have in the future for it? Like any sort of "might be cool but not the least bit feasible" things? Or maybe a "hopefully this gets added in the future" thing?

I'm going to be that one dick that shits on everyone's parade. Don't get me wrong, /vr/ is a great board and I'm not planning on leaving any time soon because of it. But as someone who came from a non vidya related board /k/, there's a lot of shit-flinging that goes on around here. The overall quality has had a noticeable decline since it's creation, and is on a fast track to being a circle jerk of pseudo-nostalgia. Lot's of anon's on /vr/ have that "modern games are all pay to win sports and COD" mentality, as if older games didnt have shit titles and shovelware.
It's still nowhere near as bad as /v/, and is definitely the best vidya related board on 4chan. But it's far from the best, or nicest overall.
Think back to the Dreamcast shitfest for example, for a solid month or so it seemed like every thread turned into people arguing over how the rules should be applied to it. And look at where we are now, 2 threads. It's like the apocalypse is upon us, a whole 2 threads about the Dreamcast are going to destroy /vr/, lookout everyone!
There are more threads right now about beta/unreleased stuff than there DC threads. Hell, we almost have more threads about fucking bubble bobble games than that.
And yet I KNOW someone is going to reply to me saying that the DC STILL shouldn't be allowed. Actually I bet someone will reply saying even 5th gen stuff shouldn't be allowed.
And dont get me started on that guy that shitposts in every thread that has "general" in the title. Or the hyperkin conspiricists for that matter.

>doom-generals
>ducktails
>ebay/craglsist threads (both pickups and prices)
>hatred of resellers
>emulator filters
>CRT fetishes
>one of the few boards with functional BST's
>generally older users
these are all examples of /vr/'s culture.

He's /vr/-tan. We've already adopted him.

He's a radical dude who refuses to acknowledge anything that happened after December 31st, 1999. He lives in a timewarp that simultaneously houses all things between 1972 and 1999.

A magical mindset where American arcades are still relevant, Sega vs. Nintendo is a gentlemanly conflict, and Atari is awesome.

Might have some kind of mental illness.
