Friendly reminder that the MS GS Wavetable Synth is broken on Windows 8. The easiest replacement is to download:

Extract it to a folder, edit the ZDoom/PRBoom config to know where that folder is, and set the music playback to GUS. This is what id themselves did for some of Doom's latest ports.

If you want to use
http://www.zdoom.org/files/fluidsynth.7z
then the two most recommended soundfonts are SGM 2.01 or ZX128 KR5. If you want to recreate the MS GS Wavetable sound and just want to replace that entirely you can find a 4mb .sf2 inside of Creative's Audigy (or later) drivers that will do the trick nicely.

Users are reporting VirtualMIDISynth as being laggy... somehow.
