There's literally nothing to imply that. It's just some land ancestor species with, presumably, a similar high-frequency sonar acknowledged vaguely familiar clickety-clackety pattern of a dolphin (familiar because of common ancestry)

The more you think about it the more the game's loosely, with very wide strokes, written plot crumbles under its own weight, so it's better not to overthink minor details or one might end up in grave danger of being stranded in bermuda triangle of fan headcannon waters.
