Everyone remembers Sakurai leaving but don't forget that Shimomura made this massive double whammy on HAL. I like to think he was using a pseudonym and also left HAL at the same time for bigger and better things, but we may never know since most Japanese devs tend to keep private.

Well, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land was announced as Hoshi no Kirby GBA, weirdly has Kirby's Dream Land 3 engine leftovers, and the first preview had entirely different level layouts not in the final game and what looked like Burning incorporated into Fire. A popular theory is that Shimomura was working on an original Kirby game, but he..left and Sakurai hastily salvaged the project as a Kirby's Adventure remake.
