Thinking about OP's question a little more, if you are a total beginner at platformers OP, I recommend:

Super Mario World -> Super Mario Land 2 -> Donkey Kong '94 -> Donkey Kong Country trilogy, then move onto Sonic, Mega Man, etc. SMW and SML2 will give you the basic platform controls for the Mario and DK platformers without the added difficulty of the NES games.

Terminator on lowest difficulty is way easier than Castlevania Bloodlines on easy mode. But I guess neither of them would be great for a beginner anyway

That's what the computer players are for, same thing with Mario Kart and fighting games.

I think beyond being slightly newer and harder to emulate than the earlier consoles, it didn't sell very well either, and is constantly living under the Wii's shadow. Kind of messed up when you think about it, but that's how we ended up with Wii U. Nintendo made huge money off of the casual market in the mid to late 2000's which is in direct opposition to games like F-Zero GX, Metroid Prime, and Starfox Adventures. They did bring back Wind Waker on the Wii U, but that's about it. The primary focus on Switch seems to be more about bringing over all the games that were stuck on the Wii U with NSO only supporting up to N64 games, for now.

It's probably easier to mod in general. There's also a lot of cool SMW2-themed SMW hacks. As for why people are nostalgic for it, that's easy. It was the best selling title for SNES and sold as a pack-in just like DKC. SMW2 didn't get the pack-in treatment until much later on when most people already had an SNES.

SMW is pretty much the perfect "baby's first platformer" because of how basic it is, it was literally the first game a lot of us played. You could also make the case that SMW is a Mario game and Yoshi's Island was a Yoshi game, and that's why it doesn't get brought up as much. I like both but for different reasons.

I like it. Cozy atmosphere, nice music, clean graphics. In hindsight I would've preferred Sunshine 2 or a remake over Splatoon
