The XEGS is the best console Atari made. I suppose it's technically 3rd gen but it's basically a 5200 that's actually good.

Seconding Atari 8 bit family. I just got my hands on an XEGS and I've been real pleased with it. Pretty much all of Atari's first party stuff is better on the 400/800 compared to the 2600 versions, and there's a good amount of bleed with the 5200 and 7800 libraries. The XEGS is basically a 5200 that actually works well. Getting a flashcart for it is a must though, there's a ton of really great stuff that only came out on tape or disk.
