Ys 8 takes place very shortly after V, so Adol's probably 20, 21 at the latest.

The artbook you mention is probably quoting the manual for the first Ys game. The developers always had big plans for the series, and it's clear they often plan new games based on this information.

"Do you know by name Adol Christin?
Adol Christin .... Thousand and hundred years
ago he was born at the small unknown
mountain village.
Where is situated the north-east of Eulope the western end in Elashia continent,
He was a very brave adventurer, who had traveled all over Eulope and foreign countries
since at the age of 16 till the death of 63 years old.
He who was born at the poor peasant's boy was commonly acknowledged to be a curious
and active youth.
In particular he wants to know the outerworld.
One day he met the traveler who stopped in his village, from when he began to go to
his own adventurous trip.
In these days - only on feet and by ship - his sphere of activity was marvelous.
In the south Afroca continent, in the east of the Tigres of Orietta, the north pole, etc.
As far as we know, his spirit of adventure to unknown strange countries is astonishing.
Can lot of that he kept his adventurous diary concerning occurencies which he met
wherever he went.
His most important works "The five huge dragons in Artago" "Celceta the sea of trees"
"Kefin the city of sand" etc.
His works - more than a hundred ones - are presented in the basement of his birthplace and at present they are quietly asleep in a striking contrast to his activity.
When we read them, we can know his fooprint.
The following story is the part of start in "Ancient Ys Vanished" the story is the first
memorial to be translated and novelized.
The place of adventure is Esteria sleeping in the ocean floor.
The story will develop as he proceeds to the land.
Light and darkness, the disturbed and chaotic era.
We want you to read through the same feeling everything he experienced himself."

Ys works like this: for every retro Ys game, there is a "modern" remake that replaces it in canon (with the exception of V, but that's probably coming soon anyway). The remakes are very faithful to the original story and settings, but most feature vastly different gameplay. Their stories are also more refined. So the SNES games aren't canon anymore (again with the exception of V).

The retro games are still worth playing because they have great music and their gameplay is often very different to the remakes.

People may tell you that Ys' story is lame or whatever, and while its elements have become sort of a cliché (since Ys was among the first of its kind) the lore is REALLY good in my opinion, and the remakes provide far more consistent mythology and lore. Like, you can see it building up to something.

Disregard this. Bump system may be hard to get used to in the retro games, but in the remakes that use it it's AWESOME. Fast paced badass combat at its finest.
