But VGA *is* a very conventional output. You should stop fussing over your personal biases and see that the crux of the issue here is that there just aren't enough single board computers with analog video, and with even those that do have it, it's minimal.

With the R-pi, this problem has been addressed in a very interesting way - through use of the GPIO pins for VGA. It would seem that a simpler signal like S-video might be doable like this without eating up the same ton of pins, maybe even finding a way of combining the normal composite signal with extra signals through GPIO to produce component video or something.

Also, if hackers tinkered with screens more deeply, maybe that would cause analog headers to be a more popular inclusion.
