It is strongly implied by background story and UAC website that it probably takes place after events of Doom 3. It is his return. There are nods within the game that suggest that Doom I and Doom II will occur later.

It says it's implied, but I don't know, it's so stupid that I loved it. It also make the UAC Crates in Wolfenstein make some sense (It says in one of the pages, that Hitler uses the Spear of Destiny to see the future and get knowledge on how to develop his technology from the vision he had about UAC) and the Doom 2 Wolfenstein maps.

The Harbinger from Wolfenstein RPG is rebuilt as a Cyberdemon we know from the tech of UAC. I'd give a shot to the phone games to get more info, but then again, they are mobile games and I hate them.
