While I agree with you that the MKs were all fundamentally pretty bad, they were still super fun in their day and even though Street Fighter 2 was technically better, I always liked MK's characters and general feel more. Also fundamentally they're just very different games. SF is a very footsies heavy series which MK was never trying to be, it's more about spamming specials at each other which certainly isn't good for depth and balance, but it was still crazy fun.

Hell even my mom could play Mortal Kombat back in the day. She would almost always pick Mileena and when she won she would do her eating fatality cheering on "Yeah Mileena! Eat em up and spit out the bones!" So accessibility isn't always a bad thing.
